The wooded Schipani-Hallissey property had been proposed for about 50 houses at one time, then for a sand extraction pit. It was currently for sale, and could have resulted in a housing development or other use that would detract from the area on the border of the Pinelands.
Mayor Bruno was instrumental in finalizing the preservation effort, and said that “open space is an important pillar for our township.” He said that the 143 acres is in addition to the 3,693 acres that have been previously preserved – one of the highest I Gloucester County.
There are currently 200 additional acres of farmland in the application process, and will be of significant help in maintaining Franklin Township’s rural and agricultural character.
